What to Buy and What Not to Buy Over Columbus Day Weekend

Columbus Day does come with noteworthy sales and promotions.

Over Columbus Day weekend, take advantage of the last major shopping holiday before Thanksgiving. Navigate your way through sales with our guide on what to buy (and not to buy) over Columbus Day weekend.

What to Buy:

Mattresses: Shopping holidays see especially good mattress deals, and Columbus Day is no different. Over the weekend, you may be able to save up to 60% on top brand mattresses at retailers like Sears, JCPenney, and Macy’s.

Shoes, handbags and other accessories: Over past years, Columbus Day hasn’t disappointed when it comes to accessory deals. Look for discounts on shoes, handbags and other accessories from retailers like Foot Locker and Steve Madden.

Jeans: We’re expecting discounts of more than 60% throughout October. Over Columbus Day weekend, look for even deeper discounts on denim at stores like Macy’s and JCPenney.

Outdoor items: With summer officially over, retailers struggle to push remaining outdoor items out the door. Expect slim pickings, but huge savings on items like patio furniture, recreational gear and other outdoor items. Try your luck at stores like Sears and Home Depot, where you might discover deals of over 75%.

Travel: Airlines and search engine sites often launch flight promotions in honor of the holiday. Often featuring deals of more than 80%, it’s a smart weekend to book holiday travel.

Clothing: Stores tend to participate in Columbus Day in a big way. Just pay attention to what you’re buying. For fall clothing, it’s best to wait until the seasons change to winter.

What Not to Buy:

Electronics: Retailers like Best Buy may tempt you with sales on electronics, but we suggest waiting until Black Friday and Cyber Monday. During these holidays, electronic stores unleash some of the best deals on TVs, laptops, and other hot electronics of the year.

Appliances: As with electronics, appliances are likely to feature prominently in Columbus Day sales. However, like electronics, appliances will drop to their lowest prices during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Autumn and Halloween items: With fall in full swing, Autumn décor, Halloween costumes, and other seasonal items are in high demand. If you can, we recommend waiting until after Halloween to buy costumes, and December to hunt down autumn-centric items.
